Thanksgiving to Go
Even when traditions change,
celebrate the people in your life.

trADITIoN. By definition, it’s
“the handing down of informa-
tion, beliefs, and customs by
word of mouth or by example from
one generation to another.” Traditions
help us understand and celebrate who
we are, where we’ve been, and where
we’re going.

My Thanksgiving memories are vivid: As a young family, we always went to Mom and Dad’s for an abundant and delicious traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

But circumstances and traditions change. Fourteen years ago we moved from West Virginia to Tennessee to be close to our adult children and their families. Eventually our daughter, Kimberly, and her husband, David, started spending Thanksgiving in South Carolina to be with his family. We had to rethink our celebration.

I have not stopped thanking God for you … asking God … to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. Ephesians 1: 16-17, NLT

Enriching change Now on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we have a traditional dinner at our home so our immediate family can celebrate together. Then on Thanksgiving Day, Paul and I join our son, Michael, and his wife, Debbie, in their home with extended family (sometimes 30 people or more) and those we know who are alone for the holiday. Everyone brings a covered dish, and the fellowship is as rich as the desserts.

Enjoy life

Amidst the changes that come with families growing and relocating, look for ways to make life easier. When everyone contributes to the meal preparation, it’s more fun and less stressful. If you’re traveling, prepare your dish in advance, pack it in a cooler, and bake it (if necessary) when you arrive at your destination. What’s really important is the time you spend with the people you love. If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner, keep it simple and let everybody help. For you — a busy mom with children, a job, schedules to keep — time is a key factor.

Sometimes circumstances change and we’re called to do life differently. It takes us out of our comfort zone, but it can be exciting! So embrace and enjoy life. And remember, it’s the people who are important. 
